Formula Sun is an exciting and flexible project that can be delivered in many ways for pupils of all ages; from primary school projects to full delivery of units within KS4 curriculum.
Pupils design, build and race boats powered by solar energy; along the way they have
the opportunity to develop skills ranging from project marketing and communication
o fluid dynamics and electronic design!
Formula Sun is tailored to fit engineering curriculum requirements enabling both
individual projects and team delivery to take place side by side. This gives considerable scope for a context when pupils carry out work that requires them to engage with employers as part of their course.
Even the most land locked schools can participate as test tanks can easily be made
from readily available industrial sized guttering.
Popular delivery methods include: club activities (e.g Young Engineers), curriculum projects or a combination of both, open day events, one day challenges, primary links schemes, or even staff training day activities etc etc !!
Starter kits are inexpensive and key components are recyclable from group to group. The scale of the boats makes it an ideal CAD CAM project, and in this respect we are supported by Techsoft UK who can supply both kits and CAD CAM advice.
Teams compete in four rounds:
“The support we have received throughout the year has been faultless, you do a great job. For us the challenge isn't simply about building boats its also about enterprise, innovation, problem solving, team building and understanding working roles”
