12 – 13 July 2011
Rokeby School, Kingston upon Thames
During the two days children aged from 7 to 11 took part in the Formula Sun solar boat challenge. The sun shone for both days enabling teams to run boats directly from solar panels or store energy using supercapacitors.. On the Monday one there were two classes throughout the day, the first class was the year seven class with the fastest time down our 5metre pool  set by team ‘e.coli’, they managed 12 seconds as their best time. This 12 second record set by the oldest of the groups held strong up until day two where it was beaten by a mere one second. The year group that set the 11 second record was from the youngest age group, year three, showing that age is not the most important factor! Every team that won in their year group  went through to a Regatta held on Thursday after school.

After racing their own boats all groups were shown how the hybrid power of supercapacitors and a Hydrogen fuel cell may well be the future in transport technology.

To conclude, it was a really good and sunny event that was enjoyed by all as well as focusing pupils on teamwork to produce a zero carbon boat.
